Ice climbing

Ice climbing is an absolutely unique and fascinating world. During the winter season, mountains and steep valleys become scattered with frozen waterfalls of endless shapes, colors and lights. Ice climbing is a mountain experience that is both aesthetic and committing. The ice climber progresses among the magical ephemeral world of ice, equipped with crampons, ice axes and ice screws which allows the climber to ascend these extraordinary shapes. Unlike rock, there is no direct contact with the element and the climber has to take into account ice conditions which vary according to temperatures, but what a fascinating vertical journey on frozen water! Ice climbing is another way to experience the world of the high mountains, different from climbing, alpinism or skiing. To our great delight, the Oisans region is a paradise for ice climbing, with more than 600 icefalls of all technical levels listed to this day.
