Ski areas are closed, but skiing is still allowed... and training is highly recommended!

Join us for a full day of learning about winter mountain safety. The mountains in the winter become an incredible playground, magnificent but also very complex to understand how to safely travel through the terrain. The layers of snow, the wind, the cold, and picking an itinerary based on the ever changing mountain conditions. The Guides at the Bureau of La Grave are offering to take you out into the terrain to learn about what it takes to safely explore the amazing winter mountain environment. We will cover how to properly use your avalanche rescue equipment and how to perform avalanche rescue. As well we will cover how to prepare for your outing: reading the weather and avalanche bulletin, choosing an appropriate itinerary based on the conditions, what to carry in your backpack. A small ski tour from one of the surrounding villages of La Grave or from the Col du Lautaret will be the perfect terrain to learn these skills.

HOW DIFFICULT WILL THE TRIP BE?

Beginner

You are able to descend a red piste in a ski area and you sometimes ski on the non-groomed edges of the piste. While climbing, you are able to walk between 3 to 4 hours with around 800m of gain.


WHAT LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS DO I NEED?

Beginner

You are able to walk 2 to 4 hours with a light day backpack.


WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON EACH DAY?

Day 1
The day of: We will meet at 8:45 at the trailhead (to be announced based on conditions): you will meet your guide and they will lend you the security gear for the day (transceiver, shovel, probe).You will pass the day as if you were the guide: preparing the outing, analyzing the conditions, checking the material, practicing avalanche rescue, and also having lots of fun skiing!
Don't forget to bring a backpack (~30L - the shovel and probe need to fit inside the backpack)
You will be guided by a certified high mountain guide.
The itinerary will be adjusted with the conditions and weather of the day, the groups level and desires.
