Italian for “iron path,” this way of climbing mountains and cliffs gained traction back during the First World War, when several pathways of iron were built on vertical cliff-sides in the Dolomites to help move troops through steep mountainous terrain. No via ferrata is the same, but each one is a combination of cables, ladders, and bars bolted onto a mountain side. While clipping yourself to its safety cables, you remain secure while reaching great and exposed heights.
