The historic route in the heart of the north face of La Meije!
Visible from La Grave, the distinctive Z-shaped route traces the logical line that leads climbers from the centre of the face to the breach in the Carré glacier. The route is obvious, an invitation to slip into the heart of the wall. Opened in 1933 by the legendary Fourastier, this route has lost none of its aura, but advances in glacier equipment have made it accessible to most mountaineers. Equipped with ice axes and rigid crampons, we will spare a thought for the pre-war rope teams who crossed the diagonal in nailed boots, cutting steps towards the summit! For us, the path will be easier, guided only by the conditions of the mountain and good physical fitness.
The route will of course take us over the summit of the Grand Pic and the fabulous ridge traverse! A journey that you dream about in books, then experience on the mountain ridge! Once you’ve descended to the village and become a north face climber, you’ll have the rather rare privilege of continuing the pleasure while sitting quietly at a terrace table, your gaze absorbed by this famous pyramid, far above the plains…
